Africa Cup of Nations – Group A
Cameroon and Burkina Faso drew 1-1 in the second match on the opening day of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in a fantastic atmosphere at the Libreville’s Stade de l’Amiti.
Benjamin Moukandjo scored from a brilliantly curled free-kick into the left corner for Cameroon to take the lead after 35 minutes
Both sides created decent chances, with Clinton N’Jie shooting past the post from six yards the easiest chance.
Cameroon keeper Fabrice Ondoa could only parry a free kick and Issoufou Dayo nodded in the leveller on 75 minutes.
Burkina Faso had repeatedly threatened from set pieces – and the solid Lions wasted the opportunity to finish their opponents off when they had their own chances.
Ondoa saved well from Prejuce Nakoulma’s near-post jab and Bakary Kone fired the rebound wide. Kone later had the ball stolen away from his head when he looked set to score, while Nakoulma was also close.
Burkina Faso had keeper Herve Koffi to thank for a wonderfully timed tackle, when he hurtled out of his penalty area and produced a stunning tackle with an outstretched leg to stop a clean-through Christian Bassogog.
As Cameroon’s ill discipline presented the Burkinabe with more and more free kicks, there was a growing sense that Cameroon would do well to see out the victory. So it proved to be when Dayo finally putting the finishing touch to a set piece after 75 minutes.
Both teams will be relatively pleased with the draw.
The only winner all day in Group A was the time to look around on the pitch for some particularly daft hair cuts that already looks a winner for the tournament in Gabon.
