Alain Traore scored with a stunning strike for Burkino Faso as they took third place from Ghana with a one nil victory in the last minute of normal time.
From 20 yards out Traore hammered a free kick that gave Burkino Faso the bronze medal and condemn Avram Grant’s Ghana team to their third fourth place finish in the last four competitions.
In a lively game that Ghana had made hefty changes the Black Stars looked more dynamic and creative in a first half where they went close on a couple of occasions. Burkino Faso had kept the majority of the team that had gone out on penalties to Egypt and to be fair they looked battle weary and tired for large chunks of the match.
The much changed fresher Ghana had more space in the midfield areas and had more chances including a total of 15 shots to Burkino Faso’s 12. The Black Stars also dominated set pieces on corners with 8 with their opponents 2.
Yet they were unable to find a way past Burkino Faso goalkeeper Kouakou at the Stade de Port-Gentil in Port-Gentil as once again the dreadful state of the pitch played a hand in ensuring that both teams weren’t playing on a level playing surface in more than one way!
Jordan Ayew was all over the pitch but both dangerous and wasteful in equal measure as Ghana attacked from the off and had one attempt bounce back off the bar. Despite looking tired Burkino Faso were soaking up the pressure and did look dangerous on the counter attack.
A stalemate at half time your money would have been on Ghana but as Ghana attacked higher up the pitch the game opened up totally allowing Burkino Faso to come forward on the break and it set the game up for a fascinating last quarter.
Traore blasted one over the bar for Burkino Faso before some all round pinball in the Ghana area allowed the Black Cats to shunt the ball away. Dayo at the back almost scored an own goal for Ghana while trying to clear the ball while on the counter attack Burkino Faso had a great chance that Ofori parried away before on the same attack Traore shot wide with a decent effort outside of the penalty area.
Coulibaly who had a fantastic competition for Burkino Faso fell awkwardly and was stretchered off with just over ten minutes to play surely giving Ghana the impetus to wrap up the game but it wasn’t Ghana that continued to press as Nakoulma was almost in on 83 minutes after slipping through two defenders but the keeper Ofori came out well to save as the ball ran away from the striker.
In the last minute Burkino Faso gained a free kick two yards out on the right hand side of the penalty area and Traore struck it beautifully to win the game for Burkino Faso.
In stoppage time Ghana threw everything at their opponents as firstly Mensah went close and from a corner with the goal gaping for him Amartey somehow headed wide and it was all over.
