Can the O’s sting the Bees to earn vital home win?

5 January 2017

It was back to reality on Monday, as resurgent Exeter City put four past an O’s side that had impressed in a 3-2 victory over Crawley Town and a hard-earned draw with in-form Cambridge United between Christmas and New Year.

However, a quick look at the results for Exeter and this weekend’s opponents Barnet shows us what can be achieved with a run of positive results. Exeter’s 4-0 win made it 17 points from a possible 21 for the Grecians, which has lifted them from bottom of League Two right up to 11th place.

Similarly, before a mixed run of form since mid-December, Barnet had won five and drawn three of the previous eight, taking them from 23th to 8th. The Bees will arrive at Brisbane Road in 9th place, just two points off the play-offs.

Despite the disappointing display at St James Park, the outlook has been significantly brightened by the poor form shown by some of our relegation rivals. Three of the four teams below us – Notts County, Cheltenham Town and Newport County – lost all three of their matches over the festive period.

Looking ahead to the match with Barnet, we should be encouraged by the improvements we have shown at home under Andy Edwards. After losing four in a row at Brisbane Road, we have now gone three unbeaten, with two wins and a draw. Paul McCallum, who has started the last four matches up front for Orient, is 2.35 to score at any time on EnergyBet.

With Newport and Notts County both away from home, and with Cheltenham Town and Accrington Stanley not in action until next Saturday, we have the chance to move away from the bottom four.
