COD and Ivory Coast Draw Great Game

23 January 2017

The late afternoon game was the first of the day in Group C as D.R. Congo and the Ivory Coast provided us with a wonderful 2-2 draw.

In an exhilarating match that was the perfect advert for African football D.R. Congo twice took the lead only to be pegged back by the Ivory Coast on two occasions.

Neesken Kebano opened the scoring for the D.R. Congo after only 10 minutes with a snapshot drilled into the Ivory Coast net after a cutback gave him plenty of room to unleash an unstoppable shot into the corner. Not sure about the celebrations though as he appeared to be miming for a spot in One Direction.

Wilfried Bony the premiership player equalized for the Ivory Coast in the 26th minute with a bullet header from a Gradel corner kick. Gradel had a decent game and was a threat particularly from his set pieces.

Congo’s lead was restored less than 2 minutes later though when Kabananga jumped with no marker following a cross from the left and his header swept passed the goalkeeper. It was one of the highest leaps I’ve ever seen in a football match since Skippy the kangaroo narrowly missed a juggernaut on the M25.

The Ivory Coast were playing high up the pitch in the second half. They were also attacking with some urgency and creating chances so no real surprise when they equalized for a second time with Die scoring from 25 yards with a large deflection off a defender.

Salamon Kalou the former Chelsea star had came on as a sub and was having a great influence on the game in the later stages and it was he who slammed the ball into the back of the net in the 91st minute after a cross from the left. Alas he was offside and the goal didn’t count and D.R. Congo clung on for the 2-2 draw.
