Football FA Cup Replays – Jan 17
There were six replays on Tuesday including non-league Sutton United traveling just 5 miles up the road to play local team Wimbledon and they surprised their league opponents with an unexpected 3-1 triumph. In a game that saw Paul Robinson sent off in the 15th minute the game was always in reach for the non-league team. 1-1 at 90 minutes the game had been fairly even but late goals from Biamou in the last minute and Fitchett six minutes into stoppage time sealed a win that gives Sutton a lucrative match against Championship bigwigs Leeds.
Blackpool now in League 2 after a dreadful 2 or 3 years, at least has a shining light on them at least in the distance. The Tangerines, who appear to have been eaten by everybody of late, peeled back the Barnsley defence in the very last minute of extra time to give the Yorkshire outfit the pip victors by two goals to one.
In the all Premiership tie Burnley beat league strugglers Sunderland 2 nil with goals from Sam Vokes and Andre Gray, Sunderland provided little in the way of retaliation and the response yet again from the team was poor. Sunderland now out of both cups can concentrate solely on the Premiership and enjoy the last few months in the premier league before their almost inevitable relegation to the championship.
Bristol City won at Fleetwood with an early 17th minute strike that now pits them against Premiership Burnley. Jamie Paterson notched for City.
Crystal Palace had some respite from their awful spiraling league form to record a rare win for the Eagles by 2 goals to 1 against Bolton with substitute Christian Benteke scoring twice after Bolton had taken the lead from James Henry.
This was Allardyce’s first win in his six games managing the South London outfit and his first win since his sole England victory all those dark months ago.
Lincoln City from the no league beat Championship Ipswich 1-0 to reach the fourth round for the first time in over 40 years and they will host the all firing Brighton and Hove Albion thanks to a Nathan Arnold last ditch goal.
In an all Championship tie leaders Newcastle were simply far too strong for Birmingham City with goals from Ritchie and Gouffran putting the Magpies 2-0 up at the break. Cotterill stung life back into the Brummies on 71 minutes but Newcastle were full credit for their victory when Ritchie added his second and Newcastle’s third in injury time. For their efforts Newcastle will travel to league one side Oxford United. Gianfranco Zola the Birmingham manager has the accolade of being the first Birmingham manager to lose all seven of his first matches in charge of the Blues.
The third and final game on Wednesday pitted Premiership Southampton against Championship Norwich City. The game on the South Coast was dreadful to put it mildly to the extent that if I were a supporter I’d have asked for my money back. It was inexcusable rubbish and thank you to Shane Long for putting everybody out of their misery with a stoppage time winner otherwise we would have had to endure 30 more minutes of hell. Southampton’s reward for saving our eyes from further punishment is a lush home tie against Arsenal.
