Chelsea beat Hull 2-0 in a match that will be remembered more for the horrendous injury to Ryan Mason where he fractured his skull in a collision with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.
No blame could be attached to either player as a clash of heads brought both players crashing to the ground and medical staff raced onto the pitch. Cahill was up and about albeit groggy after a couple of minutes but Mason lay on his back as he was given oxygen by the doctors before being stretched off to hospital. Hull confirmed in a statement that the midfielder a former Spurs player had broken his skull but was now at least talking.
Hull played very well after the 9 minute stoppage for Mason’s injury and certainly showed a lot of resolve although their attacking menace was minimal. Chelsea played within themselves and didn’t really bring much to the table with dozens of square and backward passes. Still there was enough time in the first half for Diego Costa back after recent issues and an alleged bad back that broke the deadlock with Chelsea’s second penetrating attack of the half. The first was after ten seconds of the match when Costa went close but his goal in the 7th minute of injury time had the home fans delirious and chanting his name.
Hull missed the injured Robert Snodgrass but still showed some deft touches but it was all over when Cesc Fabregas sent a free kick over for a completely unmarked Gary Cahill to nod into an empty net. 2-0 for Chelsea and despite the Spurs blip a couple of weeks ago the Blues rollercoaster continues on its unstoppable path. Hull will take a few positives away from this and we wish Ryan Mason a speedy recovery.
