Football FA Cup Replays – Jan 18
Liverpool beat Plymouth Argyle with a rare goal from Lucas Leiva to give the Reds a -0 victory against a Plymouth team who gave there all but ultimately were not good enough.
Lucas goal was his first for seven years and it must have felt like Christmas had come early for the Liverpool manager. Liverpool with another young team on the augmented by Coutinho, Sturridge and Lucas were about right for the slender margin of victory as Plymouth were unable to create enough chances against a resolute Liverpool team.
After the teams were drawn 0-0 at Anfield Liverpool came out from the off with offensive tactics that worked when they scored in the 18th minute when protagonist Philip Coutinho’s corner kick was headed in by Lucas. Some of Lucas teammates were only 10 or 11 the last time he scored a goal against Steaua Bucharest in September 2010 as Liverpool put out another young inexperienced team.
Plymouth played well but just didn’t have the tactical awareness of Liverpool as they go back to their division following this unexpected money spinner in Devon.
Of the youngsters Woodburn was good but Wilson the teenage forward looked hungry, sharp and not out of his depth and dug in during an enduring encounter between the Devon club and their more illustrious opponents. Liverpool had their chance to extend the score but failed on numerous occasions.
Origi had the best chance to do that when Yann Songo’o brought down Alberto Moreno inside the box, but the Belgian, who has not scored since 14 December, hit an unconvincing spot-kick too close to McCormick.
At the other end Plymouth’s best effort was a glorious bicycle kick from front man Jervis that painstakingly for the Argyle faithful clipped the outside of the post and harmlessly away for a goal kick.
Liverpool held on without too much concern and will be happy to have escaped potential disaster to continue on to round four. Plymouth will be happy to have netted about 1 million for the television rights to the game that was shown throughout Central Europe.
