Here is a highlight re-cap of the first week of the Premier League 2016-17 season:
Tigers Bite Foxes on the Opening Day
Claudio Ranieri said that “there was more chance of aliens landing in London than there was of Leicester mounting a successful defence of the Premier League title” and after first game of the new season against Hull City, we can tell that the Foxes might have to fight hard to avoid relegation this season. You could clearly see the gap in midfield after they sold N’Golo Kante to Chelsea and Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were still playing in holiday form.
Pep Era at Manchester City
When Pep arrived at Manchester City everyone was expecting miracles and easy wins from The Citizens, but the Premier League showed once again that is the most difficult in the world. Guardiola left Joe Hart on the bench for the game against Sunderland, and instead put Caballero on the pitch. They won 2:1 after own goal from McNair at 87’ but it showed how much work Pep and the team have to do in the fight for the championship.
Mourinho and Zlatan Already Winning
Jose Mourinho came to Manchester United to bring back the glory for Red Devils. They were very active during the transfer window, buying superstars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the most expensive player in the world, Paul Pogba. They started the season by winning 3:1 at Bournemouth after goals from Mata, Rooney and Zlatan. The future at Old Trafford looks bright and we can expect Manchester United to be a top contender to win the title this year.
7 Goals at the Emirates Stadium
Definitely the most prestigious game of the first week was in North London where Arsenal hosted Liverpool. Neither team disappointed the crowd at the Emirates, and after the final whistle Liverpool could add 3 points after a 4:3 win. Both teams showed again that they have a lot of potential in the front-line, but lack of defence might be a big problem for Wenger as well as for Klopp’s guys in the fight for the title.
