City Dominate United
Week 4 of the English Premier League saw the start of a new era for the two iconic Manchester clubs, as Guardiola’s City beat Mourinho’s United in the Mancurian derby at Old Traford on Saturday 10th. Kevin De Bruyne got city into the lead early on after just 15 minutes, and Kelechi Iheanacho had settled the visitor’s score by the 36th minute. Ibrahimovic saved United from humiliation by halving City’s lead in the 42nd minute. United’s defence were making school boy errors, and the entire game felt below par, with glaring mistakes all-round leaving fans scratching their heads when considering the money’s worth fielded by both sides. So City continue their perfect start the season, and Mourinho’s United are left reeling and trying to find their feet.
Liverpool Thrash the Champions
The Reds might not have been playing with the most consistency as of late, but they managed to trounce the defending champions, Leictester City, at Anfield on the 10th September, bagging four goals to the visitor’s one. Goals came courtesy of Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane on the home side, with a token one for the visitors from Jamie Vardy. So, Klopp’s fast-paced chaos may not be entirely misguided, but will it work again?
Conte Saved by Costa
It was looking like Antonio Costa’s Chelsea were going to witness the end of their unbeaten start to the season, but with just nine minutes until full-time, Diego Costa ensured it will continue. Costa had already given the visitors an early lead at the Liberty Stadium, with a goal in the 18th minute, but The Swans had fought back hard and secured two goals in within the space of two minutes, thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty and a sharp shot from Leroy Fer.
Drama and Determination
The Gunners snatched a dramatic victory over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Santi Cazorla. Puel’s Saints had fought hard throughout the match, after taking the lead thanks to Petr Cech, and really deserved something more. Southampton still haven’t won anything in the season so far, but if they continue in the same vein that should change. Wenger used the match to test his new signings, the £35m Mustafi and £17m Perez, and Arsenal are looking comfortable.
Elsewhere Callum Willson secured Bournemouth’s first victory of the season at the Vitality Stadium, with a win over a crumbling West Bromwich. Crystal Palace put an end to the party for Middlesbrough, claiming a much-needed win at Riversde. Stoke City were smashed by Tottenham in the Potteries, with their second 4-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium in a row. Burnley and Hull tied 1-1 at Turf Moor. Hull’s Robert Snodgrass proved his worth with a goal, and pretty much being the bedrock of their side, and Defour got one in the back of the net for Hull.
A special mention must go to Watford who made an impressive comeback, from being 2 down at the London Stadium by the 33rd minute, thanks to two headers from West Ham’s Michail Antonio, to beating The Hammers after four goals from Ighalo, Deeney, Capoue and Holebas. It was almost as if The Hornets deliberately lulled West Ham into a false sense of security, with some truly subpar play in the early minutes, before they opened a can of intense energy, pulverising Bilic’s stunned team.
