PREVIEW: PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN

10 June 2020

Get up to speed with the state of the league in our Premier League preview.

The English Premier League has been given the all-clear by authorities and will return to our screens on 17 June. Which means Premier League betting is set to return too.

Following a series of discussions and meetings held between all 20 of the Premier League clubs towards the end of last month, an agreement was made to ensure the return of the competition in mid-June. The first two fixtures scheduled to take place are Manchester City vs. Arsenal and Aston Villa vs. Sheffield United, followed by a full fixture list that weekend.

Highly valued positions in the table remain up for grabs, with only nine-points separating current fourth-place holders Chelsea from eleventh-place Crystal Palace. Join us as we take a look into the league table and remind ourselves who’s fighting for what!

League title and the battle for the Champions League

We’ll start our Premier League preview at the top. This season, Liverpool have ascended to total domination of the Premier League. As the league restarts, they’re in an incredible position up-front, with the title all but secured. With Klopp’s men needing a total of 87 points to claim their first league title in 30 years, two wins will see them move out of Manchester City’s grasp and be crowned champions of the Premier League.

Although it’s mathematically still possible for Manchester City to challenge for the title, Pep’s men will know that the dream of three Premier League titles in a row is lost to them. Secure in second place with a five-point gap and a game in hand, the Citizens will look to make the best out of the situation, and finish in second place as best of the rest.

Much like Manchester City, Leicester City find themselves relatively secure, hovering in third place with a five-point gap to Chelsea. Brendan Rodgers will want his team to look forward and not back and will be pushing them to challenge City for a possible second-place finish, setting them up nicely for Champions League football next season.

Three points away from fifth-spot, Chelsea find themselves leading an extremely tight pack of teams fighting for the valuable fourth Champions League place. Although many considered this season a write-off for the Blues due to their summer transfer ban, Frank Lampard’s squad has shown otherwise. Chelsea will hope to continue to be able to rely on their young talented group to secure crucial points against the odds.

The fight for Europa League

Manchester United find themselves fending off competition for a spot in the Europa League, only six points above eleventh place. Solskjaer will have bigger hopes for the Red Devils though, and no doubt have them focused on challenging Chelsea for a Champions League spot.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United are in similar situations. Equal on points and separated by a couple of goals, both sides will need to fight through the final games of the season for a Europa League place.

North London teams Tottenham and Arsenal have had similarly turbulent seasons, leading both clubs to change manager mid-way through the season. With Jose Mourinho and Mikel Arteta each having a point or two to prove, we’d be reluctant to rule either club out of a last-ditch effort to secure a European spot.

The battle to avoid relegation

With the restart of the league, AFC BournemouthAston Villa and Norwich City are forced to face the grim reality of their situation once again. All find themselves in the red, at the bottom of the table and in danger of relegation. Each club must view the resumption of the league as an opportunity to turn their fortunes around and pick-up some incredibly valuable points that could ensure their survival.
