It’s back to the start for Villa manager Steve Bruce this weekend, as his travel-sick side make the short journey to Molineux to take on Wolves.
Almost three months to the day since he opened his Villa reign with a 1-1 draw against Saturday’s opponents, Bruce’s record stands at seven wins, four draws and three defeats from his 14 matches in charge.
Unfortunately, 17 of the 25 points have been collected at home, with the defeats coming in three of the last four away matches. Perhaps more worryingly, Jonathan Kodjia’s late winner at QPR on December 18 was our only goal in those four matches.
Our recent inconsistency has been mirrored by Wolves, who have won three, drawn three and lost three in the nine matches since replacing Walter Zenga with new manager Paul Lambert.
The former Villa manager has steadied the ship at Molineux, after Wolves failed to build on a positive start to the season by going nine matches without a win between September 24 and December 1 – a run which saw them drop from 8th to 21st in the Championship table.
Villa fans remain positive over both Saturday’s game and the prospects of an immediate return to the top flight via the play-offs. However, if we are to make a run at the top six, we need to start scoring more goals on the road. Away from Villa Park, we have scored just seven times in 13 matches, with only 15% of those matches featuring over 2.5 goals.
The good news is that we have only conceded twice in one match under Bruce, which came at Elland Road against Leeds in early December, whilst only Nottingham Forest have kept fewer clean sheets at home than Wolves. Therefore, under 1.5 goals for Wolves @ 1.46 with EnergyBet might be appealing.
In the four meetings between the two sides at Molineux since Wolves’ first promotion to the Premier League in 2003, we have scored 10 goals at an average of 2.5 per match.
