The O’s welcome basement boys to Brisbane Road

Unfortunately, it was the same old story against Blackpool at Brisbane Road, as the O’s failed to build on the promising away performance at Colchester United. Since beating Stevenage 3-0 in August, we have only managed three goals in the next seven home matches.

However, we need to pick ourselves up quickly, as bottom club Exeter City are in town on Tuesday night. They may have lost their last two league matches, but they were both against sides in the top three in Doncaster Rovers and Carlisle United. In fact, Paul Tisdale’s side were leading until the 89th minute at second placed Carlisle on Saturday.

Despite our precarious league position, we should take comfort in the recent form shown by Newport Town. After looking isolated at the foot of the table just a few weeks ago, they have taken 10 points from a possible 12 to move out of the bottom two, leapfrogging both Colchester and Exeter. Aside from a tricky looking trip to Doncaster on Saturday, we have the fixtures to emulate this and put together a winning run of our own in the build up to Christmas.

Manager Alberto Cavasin has spoken about ‘finding a solution’ to our home form, but it is a lack of penetration in the first half of games at Brisbane Road that is the most worrying aspect. The match against Stevenage aside, we have failed to score before the 73rd minute in any home league match all season.

Let’s get behind the boys from the start on Tuesday. After all, if Gavin Massey’s first half effort had dipped under the crossbar on Saturday, we would have been back in the game at one apiece. With Colchester making the trip to 21st placed Cheltenham, it could prove to be a pivotal night in League Two, and one which we can look back on as a ‘turning point’ in our battle to beat the drop.
