When Two Lions Face Off

11 December 2017

I made an emotional return to Villa Park at the weekend to watch Millwall take on Aston Villa. I saw Millwall beat Birmingham city 2-0 at the Den earlier in the season and confidence was high with Millwall fans that this could be repeated against Steve Bruce’s side.

Pride, Passion and a Delicious Burger at Villa Park

Steve Bruce unbelievably still divides opinion amongst Villa fans. Aston Villa are very tough to beat at home and despite a slightly dodgy start to the season they are currently in fifth place. There are still fans though, who would like to see him replaced. With whom exactly, nobody seems quite sure.

I was contemplating this very question as I stood in line at the burger van. It had been almost an entire year since I had the opportunity to sample a bacon cheese burger from the ‘Farmer’s Choice’ wagon outside the Trinity road stand and it didn’t disappoint. The football on the other hand…

Farmers choice, how I’ve missed you!

Look, let’s be honest, it wasn’t a great game, however, Millwall deserved to win. Most Villa fans I spoke to vastly underrated them prior to kick-off. They were to be in for a rude awakening though as Millwall took the game to Villa and had by far the clearest chances. Millwall lacked a bit of quality in front of goal though. Some of the chances missed were done so in an almost comical fashion. It could, and probably should have been 6-0!

Aston Villa on the other hand had only one clear chance of any note. Their best strike of the day was when the Villa goalkeeper slammed a clearance quite deliberately into the heart of the Millwall fans. Unfortunately for him, this attempted assault backfired big time as he hit a 7-year old kid in the face which didn’t go down too well.

Millwall fans make some noise

If Millwall were giving it to Villa on the pitch, then the same could be said of the fans in the terraces. The supporters were truly awesome on Saturday. So vociferous in fact that one Villa fan commented, “You have to give Millwall credit they are ‘top supporters!” I swear that the decibel levels reached ‘Ozzy Osbourne’ proportions, and if you’ve ever been to one of his concerts then you are not going to be able to hear anything for a week afterwards.

Overall my opinion about the Millwall’s performance on the day… Top club. Top supporters. Brilliant atmosphere. Superb day. Really disappointing result.

My opinion about Aston Villa on the day… loved your burgers!
